The Beatles

   The Beatles were formed in Liverpool, England, in 1960. They have become one of the most popular bands in history. The group includes John Lennon (1940-1980), Paul McCartney (1942-), George Harrison (1943-2001), and Ringo Star (1840-). They mostly play 1950s rock and roll, but, later on they worked in many other genres ranging from folk rock to different types of pop.
   For three years before 1960, Lennon, McCartney, Harrison, a man named Stuart Sutcliffe and a man named Pete Best started the Beatles and became well known in Liverpool. In 1961, Sutcliffe left and Best was replaced by Starr in 1962.
   With their first hit single ''Love Me Do'' in 1962, The Beatles attained UK popularity. Even after almost forty years after thier brakeup, The Beatles' music is still popular. They have more number one albums on UK's charts then any other musical group.
   The Beatles broke up after 10 years, in 1970. McCartney and Starr are both still alive, but Lennon was shoot and killed in front of his wife and other people in 1980 and Harrison died of cancer in 2001. Although they have been broken up for a long time now, The Beatles' music is stilled listened to and well loved.

On September 3rd, 1964, Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Wilderness Act. It protected around nine million acres of federal land. This is important becuase if this land was not proptected, we would not have woods or fresh air for our lungs. Also, its important that the government got involved. The United States election of 1964 was the sixth most lopsided election in the history of the United States. Lyndon B. Johnson became president after JFK's death and then ran for re-election. He got 44 out of 50 states to vote for him. Ever since, there has not been such a large percentage of votes leaning to one candidate. 1963 JFK's assassination:
On November 22, 1963 in Dallas, Texas, President John F. Kennedy was assasinated. The shooter, believed to be Lee Harvey Oswald, was murdered before he had the chance to go to trial. This was important becuase JFK and his family were very well liked. Also, the United States had to choose another person to$ be President just right after they chose JFK. On August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. gave a speech entitled ''I Have A Dream''. This speech was about the need to put an end to discrimination and racial inequality. This speech was delivered in front of 200,000 civil rights supporters at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. and is considered to be one of the grestest speeches in human history. 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis:
During the Cold War, in 1962, The Soviet Union and Cuba allied against America. Cuba is only 70 miles off of the coast of Flordia, a US state, so when the US saw that Cuba had Soviet Union missles in it they tried to get them removed. In the end, Soviet Union and the US agreed to have the US remove their missles in Afganistan if the Soviet Union would remove their missiles in Cuba. Cuba had been controlled by America for a while and was getting tired of it. A man named Fidel Castro, a communiat, came to power in Cuba and kicked all the Americans out. The Americans wanted to get back control and sent some of their CIA and trained Cubian spies into Cuba to try to get rid of Castro but this mission failed. Until the 1960 election, Dwight D. Eisenhower was President. Then John F. Kennedy ran and won. He became the first and only Roman Catholic to become president of the United States. This vote was the closest any vote has been since 1916, and also, this was the first election that Alaska and Hawaii voted in.

Decolonization of Africa:
'Decolonization of Africa' is the transformation of Africa from colonialism to independence. Europeans forget about Africa in the middle ages but started to colonize Africa in the 1500s. In the 1800s they took on the most control. After the World Wars, the countries that owned Africa stopped controlling Africa due to not having enough resources and money and things to even control it. The Ford Mustang, launched in 1964, was one of the decade's greatest successes. In the '50s, the cars were 'boxy' but in the '60s the style of cars were smaller, more powerful and 'sportsy' like. In 1961, the Soviet Union sent the first man into space. Also, in 1961 the United States sent the first people to the moon on Apollo 13. This was important because no one had tried to go to space before this time and the technology to do this was new and impressive. Also, the Soviet Union and the United States were in a rivalry because of the Cold War, and so this was a way that they competed without actually fighting a war. Rise of Feminism:
Women were often seen as housewives, who just stayed at home to cook and clean for family. But in the early 1960s, people started to realize that women should have the same rights as men. Legislation such as the Equal Pay Act of 1963 and Title IX brought legal reform, especially as Feminists marched and protested across the United States. They wrote books too. This is important because women began to get the same rights as men and get greater freedom to wear pants, get jobs, become politicians, go places without their husbands all of the time. Most of the history we associate with the "1960s" comes in the second half of the decade and focuses on counter-cultural and social revolutionary aspects. When people think of the 1960s, they think about the "new, exciting, radical, and subversive events and trends of the period which then continued to developed in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and beyond". This is an important history and we will spend significant time talking about it, but this week I want you to focus on the following:

The 1950s

In the 1950s, Americans began to watch T.V. more and listen to music more. Certain Musicians such and Elvis Presley (1935-1977), Little Richard (1932-) and Buddy Holly (1936-1959) and entertainers such as Lucille Ball (1911-1989), Audrey Hepburn (1929-1993) and (1926-1962) were very popular. One of the reasons that these people became so popular is because for practically the first time there was a teenage culture. Teenagers were no longer expected to act like responsible adults at such a young age. Both children and teenagers saw their adolescence extended. Full High School attendance became expected and teenagers dropping out to work to support their families and themselves was frowned upon as High School became thought of as mandatory instead of a privilege (usually from now on kids dropping out of High School did so for more selfish reasons). Dating became less family oriented as more and more teenagers had access to cars and therefore began going out as a couple on dates instead staying home with their families or going on group dates. Teenagers had more of a disposable income as whatever money they made (or were given) could be spent on themselves. This money went to clothes, movies and music. Thus, the clothing, movies and music industries grew lots.

Besides the fact that so many people died and Nazi Germany was so much in control, World War II was very important. When soldiers came home from WWII they moved their families to the 'suburbs'. The image we have of the 1950s is of cute, little, well-managed households, with perfect, little housewives (wearing aprons and poofy dresses), family dinners, people getting along and everyone just being happy and cheerful all the time. Peoples image of the '60s is lots of chaos and rebellion. Certainly chaos and rebellion became 'cooler' in the 1960s but, the 1950s weren't perfect either. Many of the problems that needed to be addressed during this time (such as racism) were ignored or glossed over.

The Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the longest mountain range in the world, located along the floor of the Atlantic Ocean was discovered but Bruce C. Heezen.

Introduction: United States History 1950-2000

-We will cover the years 1950 through 2000, focusing especially on American history, though certainly we will touch on World History as it intersects with American history.

-We will spend two weeks covering the history of incremental five year periods (i.e., the last two weeks in September will focus on 1950-1955, the first two weeks in October will cover 1955-1960 and so on).

-The first week in each section, Emily will write a timeline, covering the five year period. She will also read that section's selection of reading, whether it be a novel or history textbook. She may also watch movies (including documentaries) that are relevant to the time period and write a review on the book or movie.

-The second week in each section, Emily will select three topics to focus in on, writing at least two paragraphs on each topic and she will take a quiz or write a one page paper that covers the highlights of that five year section of history.
